about me

I have a passion for the creative process. My art explores immediacy, intuitive voice, mood, texture, composition & colour.

Hello, my name is Andrew Drummond and by day I am an architect with a passion for interior architecture and furniture design.  In recent years I have explored translating and transforming my experience with composition, materiality, texture, colour and a passion for detail and process into my art.

The creative process as an architect and designer involves a balance of creative thought with considered and methodical process involving specialist input from a wide range of consultants and an often diverse client/user team together with compliance with rules and regulations.

As an architect, a successful project is the result of continuous dialogue, communication and collaboration with everyone involved. A good architect is as much a conductor or choreographer as they are talented creative.

My paintings have a directness of being, the selection of colour, mark and composition determined in the moment reflecting mood and feelings. I have found a child-like confidence for application of paint on surface, a new confidence and a voice for my creativity.

I work primarily with acrylic on canvas with a layering of newsprint and a curious exploration of typography. The work has an immediacy, quick drying acrylics offering opportunity for fast thinking and layered mark making, largely following instinct rather than planned procedure, the work has methodology but not pre-determined outcome.

Inspired by the bold colour of Katz and Warhol; the layering, texture and urgency of Rauschenberg, Richter and de Kooning; the composition of Nicholson.

The work currently falls into three phases of investigation, with common themes of material, application of paint and a desire to layer and create texture, depth and intrigue. Continually evolving and exploring, provoked by mood, by thought and by instinct… chosen ‘in the moment’ colour, marks and movement create a new layer of expression.

  • Abstract Series - I have a child like fascination with process, employing a systematic approach to many seemingly random and ‘abstract’ but to me the paintings are the voice of my inner consciousness at a moment in time. Visiting areas of my mind for thought whilst distracting from the everyday to find a colour, a stroke, a form that is of that moment. Paintings are layered over a number of days, layers of intuitive thought creating depth and texture in addition to composition and playful juxtaposition of colours, sometime complimentary sometimes creating visual tension and sometimes discomfort. The paintings aim to intrigue, to encourage interaction, striking and bold from a distance and layered and textured up close, offering new viewing experience with each glance and glimpse.

  • Of the Moment Series - explores the territory between the abstract and the real. A cross fertilisation of the abstract painting techniques, the mark making and collage materials, with deeper thought and consideration of real time subjects. Taking cuttings from a single days newspaper, it’s headlines, stories and photos a new story is created. A story that tells the hidden story, the real topical story of the day. Part art, part satirical review.

  • Colour Series - exploring the same intuitive mark making and composition in the abstract series but with a single colour, sometimes with an under layer of a complimentary tone. The colour series explore Nicholson inspired layers of composition but in more abstract shapes and forms than Nicholson's pure geometry. The layers of organic geometry interact and create a play of light across the depth of paint surface. Bold and simple Pop Art inspired canvas from a distance and deeply intriguing topography across the surface close up, ever changing through out the day.
